  • Emergency obstetric and newborn care (EmONC) training and refreshers
  • Simulation drills for bleeding after birth, eclampsia and newborn resuscitation
  • Hub-and-spoke mentorship from specialists to lower-level facilities
  • Monthly readiness drills for obstetric and newborn emergencies

Clinical priorities

What the plan asks of every facility

The EWENE Acceleration Plan focuses on the direct causes of maternal and newborn deaths.

  • Use the first-response bundle for postpartum haemorrhage — the plan targets ≥90% compliance
  • Monitor labour with the Labour Care Guide
  • Give antenatal corticosteroids when preterm birth is expected
  • Start Kangaroo Mother Care for small and sick newborns
  • Treat every woman with respect and dignity
