Every Woman Every Newborn Everywhere (EWENE) is a global initiative that has been adopted by Kenya led by MOH and partners that aims at accelerating reduction of maternal and newborn deaths.
A Letter to Every Kenyan
"During my pregnancy, I walked 12 kilometers to the hospitals "— Jane, a mother from rural Kenya who lost her newborn due to lack of timely care.
Approximately 5,000 maternal deaths per year from preventable pregnancy-related causes
NMR of 21 per 1,000 live births — approximately 42,000 neonatal deaths per year
Approximately 30,400 stillbirths annually — nearly half during labour
Stillbirth rate of 19.2 per 1,000 births — over 70% of perinatal deaths
Accounting for 66% of infant deaths and 51% of all under-5 deaths

- Poor roads, no phone credit, no ambulance services
Ambulance rehabilitation and GPS tracking. County toll-free emergency call centres. Response time targets: <60 min urban, <90 min rural.

- Only 5% of maternity facilities have full obstetric and newborn care equipment
- Oxytocin stockouts 40% · MgSO₄ stockouts 48% · Benzyl Penicillin stockouts 47%
- Only 37% of facilities meet all BEmONC standards
900 health workers trained in EmONC across 26 counties. 500 trained in comprehensive newborn care. Zero stockout commitment. Pre-positioned PPH bundles including carbetocin, TXA and calibrated VD drapes. Monthly emergency drills in 260 skills corners. Blood transfusion services strengthened.
